Mission Statement

The sole purpose of the UM Family for Families is to protect our children's natural habitat.  This group of prominent local community volunteers will support the Center for Family Studies as it promotes community awareness, develops programs for troubled youth, acts as a conduit to different advocacy agencies and promotes fund-raising activities. Monies raised will be used to expand the research, training and services of the Center for Family Studies in our community.

The Center for Family Studies views the individual as integrally related to her/his social and cultural fabric.  The natural environment or habitat of our children is comprised of their families, schools, friends, communities, religious communities, and the cultural messages that they receive from those each of these groups as well as from the larger society.  The Center's mission is to study the natural habitat, or repair it once damage has occurred.  Because the poor do not have the material resources to protect themselves, they are often at increased risk.

Since its establishment in 1972 as the Spanish Family Guidance Center, thousands of minority families have been served, and hundreds of professionals have learned the intricacies of supporting and repairing troubled families, at the Center for Family Studies.  Our focus on families are the most immediate and influential aspect of the natural habitat of children, and when children are troubled, families may comprise children's greatest resource.

The Center for Family Studies is considered the nation's foremost program of minority family intervention research.  The Center has won honors and distinctions from, among others, the National Institutes of Health, the American Psychological Association, the Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, The Rosalynn Carter Caregiving Institute, the Association of Hispanic Mental Health Professionals, and the National Coalition of Hispanic Health and Human Service Organizations (COSSMHO).
