Read what some attendees have to say about our training program

The CFS is proud to offer training in family-based intervention techniques which are detailed in the pages that follow.  Our program is state-of-the art and represents clinical knowledge developed at the Center.  The Center’s work has received considerable national and international recognition and its team of professionals are frequent lecturers and consultants nationally and internationally.

One of the guiding principles of the Center’s programs is the integration of research and clinical practice in the tradition of the scientist-practitioner model. Family systems therapists view the behaviors of family members as interlinked in predictable patterns of interactions. The transformation of these repetitive patterns of interactions is the focus of family systems therapies.

Family therapists want to know how to improve the effectiveness of their interventions to transform interactions. Our scientific findings explain and describe the intricacies of the interactions between therapists and families, and how therapists can behave to achieve the desired transformations in family interactions. We offer a menu of training opportunities which we believe will effectively meet the challenges that contemporary families present.

The following training modalities are offered:

On-Site Training Programs

The Center for Family Studies designs customized workshops, seminars, live supervision to serve the needs of agencies and professionals nationally and internationally.

Customized Courses Offered

The Center for Family Studies offers customized courses to meet the individual staff development needs of agencies locally, across the United States, and internationally. Courses can be conducted at our offices on the campus of the University of Miami School of Medicine or on-site. All courses are available in Spanish as well as English.  The costs for various services offered are negotiable.

Workshops
Designed to present an overview and specific intervention methods of Brief Strategic Family Therapy (BSFT) and/or Structural Ecosystems Therapy (SET).

These workshops offer clinicians a concise yet thorough introduction to our family-based intervention models. Workshops can be tailored to satisfy individual agency goals for staff development and can  accommodate groups of diverse sizes and levels of expertise. Workshop components can include video presentations, live consultation, and case review.

Clinical Externship

In its 8th year, the clinical externship provides an intensive clinical and supervisory experience for trainees seeking to build their family therapy skills. A group of 4-5 trainees meets weekly for 20 weeks of 4 hour sessions with guidance from an expert supervisor from behind a one-way mirror. Supervision includes case planning, telephone call-in during live sessions, and videotape review. The externship also includes didactic presentations of the BSFT/SET models.

Clinical Consultation and Supervision

We offer ongoing case consultation and supervision services for clinicians implementing the BSFT or SET models. Telephone consultation and supervision is available for long-distance services (with videotapes being sent to the supervisor in advance).
