$22
MILLION IN NIH FUNDING RECEIVED
BY UM CENTER FOR FAMILY STUDIES
The University of Miami Center
for Family Studies, in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral
Sciences, has received $22 million in NIH funding to conduct five programs
of research. José
Szapocznik, Director of the Center, is Principal Investigator on three
projects amounting to $19 million. The largest program, funded for $11
million by the National Institute of Drug Abuse, is dedicated to bringing
state of the science treatment to Florida’s drug abuse treatment system.
A second program funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, will develop and study parenting, drug abuse prevention and risky sexual behavior prevention program targeting 8th grade Hispanic adolescents and their families living in Little Havana. While there is much research on the important role of families in adolescent development, and in particular Hispanic families, no study has ever been published using a family intervention for the prevention of risky sexual behaviors that place youth at risk for contracting the AIDS virus.
A third major program, funded conjointly by the National Institute of
Environmental Health Sciences and the National Institute of Mental Health,
will study the impact of building architecture, street design and
landscapes, and other "built environments" on the health and
well-being of elderly people. This is the first time ever that the NIH
recognizes the built environment as a potential health risk. This work brings together architects and psychologists.
A fourth study directed by Dr. Daniel Santisteban and funded by the
National Institute on Drug Abuse is designed to learn more about the
unique values, acculturation, and immigration-related life experiences of
Hispanic adolescents and families and how these values and experiences
impact the development and treatment of adolescent drug abuse.
Finally, the National Institute on Drug Abuse has funded a research project to
study what actually happens during prevention intervention.
