The Center for Family Studies (CFS) is a Division of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine
The
Center for Family Studies is dedicated to improving the quality of life
for families.
It is considered one of the nation’s flagship programs for the
prevention and treatment of minority adolescent behavior problems.
Much of our research has focused on conduct disorder, delinquency,
substance use and other disruptive behaviors.
The Center has developed an empirically validated therapy for
adolescent problems, Brief
Strategic Family Therapy (BSFT).
Research has been conducted mostly with Hispanic families and is
currently being tested with African-Americans.
The mission of the Center is to disseminate this family therapy
model through our publications and our nation wide training program.
We are also extending this model to working with families where one
of their members is experiencing medical problems that are disruptive to
family functioning, such as those related to HIV/AIDS.
Beyond working with individual families, the Center’s mission
extends to conducting research and influencing policy and public opinion
on how to build a better social and physical environment that is
supportive of families and children.
